WHAT ARE BACKLINKS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Google measures numerous amounts of information to gather your ranking when it comes to google placement on the search results. 3 main factors that they take into account are Keywords, Backlinks and Bounce Rates. The more keyword specific you are, and the more backlinks, the more likely they are to rank you. This is a good start. Easy to get those. Bounce rates are when a visitor clicks on your site, and then leaves again without taking action. Also, easy to get, and Google then punishes you for it, and stops ranking. Hence the spammy ‘SEO’ people promise page 1, but it doesn’t last long.
Backlinks are where they will go to all the blog post’s and post a comment on the blog, with a link to your website in it. The more backlinks, the ‘better’ it appears. However Google is smarter than that and realises that QUALITY backlinks are far greater than QUANTITY backlinks. And therefor a backlink in a comment on an Automotive Blog to a site selling baby products is NOT as good as a backlink from a ‘parenting forum’.
